Posted: 11 Apr 2011 11:32 AM PDT

Audi Hungaria has been a successful manufacturer and supplier of high-tech engines for 18 years. Today the 20 millionth engine rolled off the production line in Gyor. The unit is a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder common rail diesel engine with 125 kW (170 hp) that was installed in a white Audi TT Coupé in Audi Hungaria’s vehicle assembly facility. The sports car with the milestone engine is destined for the Belgian market.

“The 20 millionth engine is a symbol for 18 years of successful engine production by Audi Hungaria. Nearly all the engines installed in Audi models come from Gyor,” says Frank Dreves, Member of the Board of Management for Production at AUDI AG and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of AUDI HUNGARIA MOTOR Kft. “Audi Hungaria therefore has a special strategic significance within the Audi Group. This company plays a major role in our long-term growth strategy,” continues Dreves.

  • Broad production portfolio with efficient, powerful engines

Thomas Faustmann, Managing Director of Audi Hungaria, adds: “Engine production is and will remain our core competence. It is our guarantee for success, which is based on the premium quality of our engines, our flexible team and constant technological advancement.”

3,950 direct employees currently work at the engine production facility in Gyor. 270 engine variants roll off the assembly lines there, from four-cylinder to 12-cylinder units with outputs ranging from 55 kW/75 hp to 419 kW/570 hp. The engines are installed in more than 40 models of the entire Volkswagen Group at 26 locations worldwide.

“20 million engines – that is a testament to the outstanding performance of our employees. We will expand our product range with additional highly efficient engines and expand the existing production segments to thus offer our employees long-term prospects,” says Achim Heinfling, Managing Director for Production at Audi Hungaria.

Scirocco R-Cup

Fasten your seatbelts! This will be the motto for the 2011 team of drivers in Oschersleben on Tuesday and Wednesday, when the newcomers and old hands alike will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves for the first time with the revamped 2011 model of the Scirocco R-Cup at the annual introductory course.

In comparison to its predecessor, the update has a distinctly more aggressive appearance and is also 40 kilograms lighter thanks to CFRP lightweight components. Air intakes on the bonnet deliver better cooling and a large spoiler results in greater surface pressure. Meanwhile, the innovative push-to-pass system returns unchanged this season. This allows the drivers to boost their power by 50 hp at the press of a button, resulting in some spectacular overtaking maneuvers.

  • Company to make official presentation this month at the Shanghai Motor Show
  • Presentation of SEAT’s most popular models – the IBIZA and LEON

SEAT Chairman James Muir said: “the Chinese market offers a great opportunity for a brand like ours. SEAT is synonymous with design, being young in spirit and sportiness, attributes which are greatly appreciated in this market”.

SEAT has identified that there is a large demand for distinctive European cars among consumers in China and believes that the timing is right to expand into this key market. “Our research shows that Chinese car-buyers value performance and dynamism. Furthermore, technology and state-of-the-art engineering are important to them and they are very design conscious. Volkswagen celebrates Chattanooga’s transportation future

Refurbished Steam Engine Celebrates Chattanooga’s Transportation Past and Present

Volkswagen Group of America, Chattanooga Operations today held a ceremony to commemorate the completion of the rail system that will move nearly 85% of the cars built in the factory to Volkswagen dealer network across North America.

The rail yard at Volkswagen Chattanooga has access by CSX, which will serve the East Coast and Norfolk Southern, which will serve the other territories. The trains will deliver Passats to sixteen US destinations, three Canadian destinations and one destination in Mexico.

“This is another important milestone in Volkswagen’s return to production in North America. The rail yard is a vital connection for Volkswagen Chattanooga, as the vast majority of our cars will ship by train,” said Frank Fischer, CEO and Chair of Volkswagen Chattanooga.

“But at a local level, I think it’s appropriate that Chattanooga’s past transportation icon, embodied by a beautiful 1904 steam engine was here to celebrate Chattanooga’s transportation future, which will be produced very soon here in this factory,” Fischer said.

The Tennessee Valley Railroad Authority will serve as the switching agent to assist in moving the cars from the factory rail yard to the switch yard where CSX and Norfolk Southern will take them for transport across the country.

“With the rail network being a critical component of a successful supply chain, Wallenious Wilhelmsen Logistics is delighted to support Volkswagen’s rail connections via CSX and Norfolk Southern,” said John Felitto, President & CEO of WWL Vehicle Services America and EVP of Wallenious Wilhelmsen Logistics Americas. WWL handles vehicle processing and yard management at the Chattanooga Plant.

The day began with the Golden Spike ceremony participants arriving on a former Southern Railway #630 steam locomotive originally built in 1904. The engine was retired in 1952, returned to service in 1967. In 1999 it was donated to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum by Norfolk Southern. It has just undergone a ten-year overhaul and returned to service this year.

CSX serves major markets in the eastern United States and has direct access to all Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports, as well as the Mississippi River, the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway. The company also has access to Pacific ports through alliances with western railroads.

Norfolk Southern Railway subsidiary operates approximately 21,000 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia, serves every major container port in the eastern United States, and provides efficient connections to other rail carriers. Norfolk Southern operates the most extensive intermodal network in the East.
