Vyrus Motorcycles Being Sold in India

Posted: 09 Apr 2011 10:00 PM PDT

Hi guys, Paul here again. With motorcycle companies feeling economic pressures, expanding into new markets is one way to avoid losing revenue. Italian motorcycle maker Vyrus is one such company who will be bringing their race replica motorcycles to a new market, India. Typically sold in very small quantities, the Vyrus motorcycles will be mass produced by the end of 2011 for sale starting in India around September.

The Vyrus motorcycles uses a hub-centered steering system on a swingarm instead of the conventional steering systems using forks and triple clamps. Without those traditional pieces, the motorcycle sheds a lot of weight. Most components are then bolted to the engine, or twin sub-frames instead of a traditional frame.

Originally powered by Ducati 955 and 1198 engines for the 984 and 985 Vyrus models, a new motorcycle powered by a Honda CBR600RR engine will compete in the Moto2 Gran Prix races. As the basis for the mass production model, the Moto2 Vyrus weighs a scant 135 Kg (297 lbs), the event’s minimum allowed weight.

The newer mass produced motorcycles will be street legal race replicas called Vyrus 986 M2 Factory Moto2. The price for this new motorcycle is expected to be around €25,000 ($35,000). Other estimates range as high as 22 lakh INR (220,000 INR) (€35,000) ($50,000 USD) for sale in India. Anticipation suggests that the motorcycles will be more widely available in more countries as production progresses but this remains to be seen.

The motorcycles will be sold in India by The ESTD, a new conglomerate expanding into motorcycles, yatchs, and sports cars that also owns InterGlobe Enterprises, a business, IT, hospitality, and aviation conglomerate including the Indian airline IndiGo.

For comparison, a new stock 2011 Honda CRB600RR has a US MSRP of $11,199 (€8,000) (5 lakh INR) and weighs 410 lbs (186 Kg).
